I’m starting to realize trying to balance work, and a daily writing routine is becoming increasingly unbalanced. Knowing I’m going back to my regular work schedule after the holiday weekend ends. Meaning I need to augment my writing routine to meet my own goals for each day. Yet, given I’m working on multiple stories, including a few rough ideas for later. Stretching the creative machine in excess, I’m starting to feel the creative well run dry randomly.
Knowing I need to find a balance between work and my creative pursuits. Making a quick decision to alter my schedule. Thinking it over, I realized I needed to break the week down. Focusing on a different idea, each day. Trying to distribute the workload without getting writer’s block or even worse causing myself to burnout. I hope it works to keep the creative juices flowing while allowing me to digitize pieces I’ve written by hand. Along with trying to get a blog post made once a week.
It has been a busy thirteen days, as work gets busier with leagues and band nights resuming. Yet I know there is more to come once the temperature drops over the coming weeks. Ignoring the irritation that causes me since it has limited my ability to write at work greatly. Which limits it even more outside of work since I will be sleeping longer to recharge and refuel for the next shift. Either I need to start drinking more coffee or figure out a way to get a more restful respite?
Moving away from that, my writing routine is in flux. Sometimes I meet exceed my goal, and other times I just don’t have any motivation to write at all. I haven’t decided if it burnout or just mental stress from life zapping away my creative juices. Which leads me to conclude I either need to change my routine into something more flexible and practical to prevent burnout. The question is how much of it do I change?
I may have a new opportunity as an outlet for my stories, waiting to hear back at the moment from my trending stories. Which should be exciting I hope and ignite my creative spark to a brighter flame. Once I learn more and hear back, I will share what I can.
After 15 days of writing 8 paragraphs split between two increasingly large short stories, I have realized something. My ability to write short stories is limited unless I have a word or, page limit for it. Which is either practical or a tremendous hassle for me. Given my desire to publish a physical novel. Yet it does have its practical purpose if I would want to do a serial, or annual installment in a story for a magazine or anthology. It is an oddly vexing contradiction within the nature of a being creative I think. Do you limit the scope of the story, or do you allow yourself to fulfill its full potential?
Outside of that slight paradox of frustration, and inspiration writing is going well most days. I have struggled a few days in this routine due to a mixture of sinus problems, mind-grains, and mental stress. On those days I try to at minimum do a paragraph in both stories just to keep the creative juices flowing. Usually, the day after if I’m feeling clearer, I double the goal to sixteen paragraphs plus whatever didn’t get done the previous day.
Given now that the busy season at work is beginning, I have decided to write six paragraphs a piece in both stories. Since writing at work may pose to be almost impossible when work is busy. It seems to be a rational step forward, instead of doubling the 8 paragraphs to 16 paragraphs in both stories. I would prefer to avoid writer’s block or a mental burnout.
While August, may not have been the most productive month between picnics and running a garage sale. Along, with starting a new job during the third week of the month. However, I know what I want to do for September. Well, mostly anyway.
General Goals for August:
- Look into editing services for Rise (seasons of dragons and death)
- Insert the map, once the editing is done
- Create and send out query letters
- Reach 100 followers on here
Reach 1000 followers on Twitter, and 100 likes on Facebook
Here is my top five posts for this month, feel free to check them out:
- WEP Challenge Spectacular Settings entry
- Six Sentence Stories #24
- Late midweek update or Thursday update for August
- Six Sentence Stories #16
- Wednesday update
Hopefully, next month will be as productive as this one. Even with the new job.
Now on to a slightly new thing, I’m trying to figure out. I have created a new addition on my menu entitled: Short Stories and Random musings. It will keep my short stories organized, especially the six sentence ones. Also it allows me to showcase my other short stories and writing contests entries. It is right by the “My Works,” section of the menu. If anyone has any idea how to get the parent page working, please comment below. For now, I’m just using hyperlinked pages.
I could say July has been unproductive but that would be a lie. Honestly between the Cherished Blogfest this past weekend, getting my room repainted, and concluding the writing of Rise (Seasons of Dragons and Death,) the month has been productive.
Usually in the beginning of each month I post my goals for the month under my Monthly Sum-ups and Goals for the month. For this month they were these:
- Look into making an
author Facebook and Google plus account
Finish and start editing Rise (Seasons of Dragons and Death)
Redraw the map with more detail and insert it into the first draft
Look into getting a cover made for it
Make a final synopsis, and a query letter for publishers
- Create an email list
- Get to 15000 words in Anarchy
- Reach 100 followers on here
Reach 500 to 750 followers on Twitter
While I may not have got all my goals accomplished, I feel content with how much I have managed to get down in thirty days. Of course getting my room painted and remodeled some took up more time than I expected caused some delay. Ah, the great joy of having to wait for paint to dry.
Top posts for the month:
- Cherished Blogfest: What is my cherished object?
- Someone bring me some inspiration and some coffee, please
- Creative Resurgence
- Cherished Blogfest: Final day of cherished objects
Some slight news, I now do posts at Graphic policy as well. I cover comics books, and science and fantasy shows. Hopefully next month will be just as productive.
Well after hitting my first goal for June less than a day ago to get 50 additional pages written in my main project Rise (death and a dragon). After getting that I turned my attention to my second project, Anarchy to accomplish my second goal for month of reaching 10,000 words in that which I managed to accomplish just about an hour or so ago. That means out of the 7 goals I put forth for myself, I got three of them done. Of course given that we still have a day in left in June, I still have some time time to bolster that number.
Also I have managed to set up a google sheet for my Writers spotlight Wednesday. I have a link to it on my homepage but I will also post the link here for those interested.Click here to fill out the sheet —> http://goo.gl/forms/C3QZUTKwNq
Now to work on the rest of the goals in the short time that remains in the month.
Well I hit 50 followers, accomplishing one of my goals for this month.
Looking back at the beginning of the month from where I was there and where I am now. I have defiantly made progress, more than I though I would get in such a small window of time. While Rise (death and a dragon) is my main focus and progressed almost halfway to the goal I desire to reach by the end of the month of getting fifty pages added to it. Currently at 221 pages from the 199 pages it was at the beginning of the month, I’m excited and happy with my rate of progress. My progress in my superhero book/ graphic novel idea has been coming along much more slowly since that isn’t my focus at the moment, but I have manged to add a few pages to that as well here and there. The progress may not have been as rapid as I would like but progress is still progress.
Now to some none book/writing/author related news, I may be getting a job at a comic book store that one of my mom’s bosses wants to open. While I may not have the job yet or am certain I will, the guy wants my help to bring in customers and will pay me in comics. That makes the massive geek/nerd in me ecstatic.
Like most authors, I like to have monthly goals. Both in terms of writing and attempting to build my social media presence as an author. Usually I just post summaries at the end of the month, without any indication on what my goals were for the month. Well to remedy that situation, I have made a general page where I will post goals for the month, and links to months past via a menu system. If you want to check it out, the page is called Monthly Sum-ups and Goals of the month. The link is below.
